This present volume in the series Culture and Power from Stalin to Gorbachev includes documents on cultural issues of the Central Committee of the CPSU of 1953-1957. This epoch, named the "thaw" by Ilya Erenburg, embraced absolutely new or completely forgotten cultural phenomena, like poetry evenings in the Politechnical Museum and Mayakovskii Square, literature of "samizdat", and more. The political authorities started to look for a new way of managing the ideological life of Russian society and a new way of dealing with the most educated class and the intelligentsia.
