A Trend in the Russian Orthodox Church

The “Josephism” movement (from the name of its leader, the Leningrad metropolitan Iosif ) represented an attempt at legal opposition to the Russian Orthodox Church after its hierarchy recognized Communist power and was totally submitted to KGB control. Using new recently declassified archival documents and the memoirs of the few survivors, priests and laymen, the author reconstructs the complicated history of spiritual opposition in Russia from the 1920s to the 1960s. The opposition was severely repressed. Shkarovskii shows the evolution of “Josephites”, their transformation into a branch of the underground “Catacomb Church”.
