Russian painter I.Ia. Bilibin (1876-1942) is best known for his unsurpassed illustrations of Russian fairy tales. His personal life consisted of three periods: pre-revolutionary, emigration (1920-1936), return to the Soviet Union. This book contains a collection of documents on his life and work in Egypt (1920-25). The largest part of it consists of Bilibin‘s letters to his beloved student and collaborator Liudmila Chirikova (1896-1995) which are published for the first time. Also included are his notes about Egypt and its Russian expatriate community, as well as memoirs of some of his close associates who accompanied him during this period.
