The ecclesiastical reform launched by Patriarch Nikon in 1653 evoked the vast resistance known as the Old Believer movement. Based on great spiritual power, the movement not only helped its adherents to live through times of persecution, but also contributed to the spiritual and intellectual life of imperial Russia. The history of the Vyg Old Believer community founded in the deep woods of northern Russia in 1694, demonstrates one of the most impressive evidences of that. The literary and artistic legacy of the community is extremely rich and diverse: literature, manuscripts, icons, posters, applied and decorative art. The Vyg literary school gave more than 30 writers and several hundred of literary works.
