Unlike the medieval miniatures of the West, which were chiefly used to illustrate manuscripts of a religious nature, those of the Middle East served to illuminate the heroes epic Shah-nama, the didactic and amorous poems of Nizami`s Khamsa, parables, fables, and the like. These 16 cards represent the best from the collection of Iranian miniatures housed in the Saltykov-Shchedrin Public Library in St. Petersburg. Parallel text in Russian and English.
