He was born in the small town of Gomel, and inherited it from his father field marshal P.A. Rumiantsev-Zadunaiskii. For almost his whole life N. Rumiantsev kept building and improving this town. The story of his life is told on the background of the history of White Russia (Belorussia) and his town Gomel.
