Based on extensive correspondence of Russian slavicists, the monograph offers a representative picture of the fate of leading Slavic scholars, shows their relationship with political power, portrays newly imposed ideological restrictions on the methodology and areas of study. The analysis of personal correspondence allowed the author of this book to determine the moral and psychological state of these scholars, to trace the struggle to uphold academic traditions and to examine the problem of scholarly and moral resistance, compromise, and conformism within the academic community.
