The name of a major and widely known writer of his time Georgii Chulkov (1879-1939) is now obscure for the general reader. This book contains the best novels, stories, philosophical and literary criticism, and memoirs of this prolific writer. Unlike other symbolists, Chulkov seeks to create a rich, dynamic, and sometimes adventurous plot in his novels. In philosophical essays he discusses sources and ways of freedom and ponders the relation between art and freedom. As a critic, he addresses the creations of "Silver Age" artists: V. Solov’ev, A. Blok, F. Sologub, D. Merezhkovskii, M. Vrubel`, and others. The extracts from his book of memoirs "Years of Wandering" form the last section of this volume.
