He reviews works of his great predecessors: Belinskii, Gogol`, Nekrasov, Pushkin, Tolstoi. Some of these notes were published in his magazine Vremia, the others in his Diary of a writer in 1873-1880. Also included are some passages from his correspondence with other writers.
