This monograph analyzes the historico-religious and political aspects of a tragically famous case of a Jew, Mendel` Beilis (1911-1912), who was falsely accused of the ritual killing of a boy, and found guilty. L. Katsis studies positions on this case of well known Russian philosophers and writers: Father Pavel Florenskii, Z. Gippius, D. Merezhkovskii, V. Rozanov, etc. This book investigates the specific features of the blood libel in Eastern Orthodox Church tradition. The Author studies the issue against a wide cultural background, including theological works: from monarchic (L. Tikhomirov, M. Men`shikov) to liberal (V. Korolenko), from frankly anti-semitic to zionist (V. Zhabotinskii). Also studied in this book is the influence of theological argument at the time of the Beilis case on the Russian avant-garde.
