This is the first in Russian historical study on the history of Russian intentional agrarian communes in the context of the social, cultural, and political history of Russia in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. One of the leaders of this movement was Aleksandr N. Engel`gardt (1832-1893), a Russian agronomist, journalist, member of the group Zemlia i Volia (Land and Freedom), and professor of St. Petersburg University. This book was the doctoral thesis of Irina Gordeeva (b. 1975).
