This book by a well known Russian historian of the 19th century traces the life of Emperor Alexander II from his birth to his tragic death. The author describes the prince’s childhood and youth in depth with a special emphasis on his educational program. This program, as well as the prince’s travel around Russia, helped to shape the Emperor’s world view and civic virtues: emancipation of the peasantry, flexible international politics, securing Russia’s position in the Far East, and the final conquest of the Caucasus. Many attempts on his life and his eventual murder by revolutionaries caused many reverberations in subsequent Russian history. An appendix includes some historical documents related to the military union of Germany and Austro-Hungary against Russia: his letters, telegrams, and reports.
