This is a reprint of the 1901 edition with corrections of the book by well known historian Ivan Zabelin (1820-1908) where he gives his original interpretation of the social cataclysms of the Time of Troubles through two Russian historical figures: Minin and Pozharskii. This book is a collection of several essays published for the first time in the historical literary almanac "Russian Archive" in 1872. Zabelin disputes another popular interpretation of the same events by the historian N. Kostomarov. The book is easy to read and addressed to a general audience. Appendices include 19 documents of 1611-12 related to the topic.
