This book takes a special place in social and scholarly life of Sergei Mel`gunov (1879-1956), a historian by education, a regular contributor to the liberal newspaper Russkie Vedomosti in 1900-1916, a founder and co-editor of the historical journal Golos Minuvshego who was several times arrested, sentenced to death in 1920 but later exiled in 1922. He was the first one who published the documented stories of the Bolsheviks` massacres in the first years of their power. This book contains these bloody statistics: case by case, year by year, place by place. It also describes various methods of terror used by the CheKa during the Civil war. This book was published in Germany in 1923. Also included are portraits of leaders of the Cheka and their role in terror. Bibliography, name index.
