Aleksandr Ivanovich Koshelev (1806-1883) was a very important figure in the Russian society of the 19th century. A close friend of I. Kirievskii and A.S. Khomiakov, publisher and editor of the Slavophile periodical Russkaia Beseda in 1856-1860, publisher of his own periodical "Sel`skoe Blagoustroistvo" (1858-59), Koshelev was also a contributor to many Russian periodicals and the author of about 20 brochures. This memoir is one of very few about the Slaphophile circle, its ideas and values. Koshelev`s "Zapiski" were his response to the other great memoirs of that time "Byloe i Dumy" by A. Gertsen.
