This book by the notable slavicist Daniel Waugh (Univ. of Washington, Seattle) studies an 18th century manuscript. The work deals with the Petrine epoch and the culture of the Russian provinces. It challenges existing paradigms about the "backwardness" of Russia and traditional interpretations of "modernization" under Peter the Great, extends one`s knowledge about the literary culture of the Viatka region.
