Funeral rites of the Western and Southern Slavs

This new volume in the series Traditional Spiritual Culture of Slavs studies archaic ideas about death, the dead, their existence beyond the grave, the soul, and the other world. The monograph studies these ideas as they are presented and communicated though rituals, other folklore sources and beliefs. Based on this material the author offers some hypotheses about the typological character old Slavic paganism and its relation to the Christian tradition. In addition to description of the pagan mythological world picture this book also discusses the Russian Orthodox tradition of commemoration of the dead.
