It tells the story of the relations between historian archeologists and the political regime of 1920-1940s which dictated what to study and what results they wanted. This "sotsial`nyi zakaz" influenced not only the choice of themes and places of excavation but further history of archeological sites on the territory of Russia. This book includes the personal stories of Russian archeologists: some of them left the country, others were repressed, those remaining kept working in the proposed conditions.
