This book focuses on German-Russian cultural contacts and their role in forming the spirit of "St. Petersburg civilization". The author starts with the influence of the Lutherans, and ends with "philosophical intoxication" with the ideas of Shelling, Hegel, Marx, and the anthroposophical passions of early symbolists. The author studies the German influence of three periods: medieval (from Livonia and the Hanseatic League), from the Northern Wars to the second half of the 19th century, and during the two great Russian-German wars of the twentieth century.
