This is a memoir of a well known Russian geneticist, Raisa Berg (1913-2006), about her own life, the fate of genetics in Russia under Stalin and in the post-Stalin period. Berg was a friend of many outstanding Russian scientists: Andrei Sakharov, Vladimir Vernadskii, etc. She was forced to emigrate in 1974. The book was first published in Russian by V. Chalidze (1983), then partially in English. This edition is the most complete and is illustrated with paintings by the author.
